Independent Confirmation Thresholds: Match Both Origin and Proposition

Analyst guide · Classified

Direct answer: Corroboration requires independent origins that actually support the same proposition. More summaries do not satisfy a source threshold when they repeat a smaller set of originals or concern another claim.

A practical verification workflow

  1. Define the proposition and threshold before counting. A source relevant to a neighboring topic may provide context without directly supporting the proposition being released.
  2. Trace notes, translations and quotations to originating records. Preserve the dependency graph so repeated circulation does not inflate the number of sources.
  3. Check proposition alignment at each origin. Independence alone is insufficient if an independent record supports Q while the decision concerns P.
  4. Report the threshold result narrowly. Too few qualifying sources does not automatically prove the proposition false; it means the declared release condition has not been met.

A separate worked illustration

A fictional briefing has four summaries of one observation and two summaries of another. A third independent record concerns a different proposition. Counting seven documents as seven confirmations hides both dependency and relevance problems. The analyst should count qualifying origins, then identify what additional evidence the predeclared rule still requires.

The common reasoning error

Do not silently lower the threshold after seeing the available evidence. If the rule changes, record that as a new decision rather than presenting it as the original test.

Keep an auditable analyst note

Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.

Questions readers ask

Can an independent but irrelevant record satisfy corroboration?

No. It must support the proposition covered by the rule.

Does insufficient corroboration establish that a claim is false?

No. It establishes a limitation in the available support or release condition.
