Contract Value, Accepted Sales and Cash: Build a Revenue Waterfall

Analyst guide · Corporate Intelligence

Direct answer: A framework ceiling, an order, an accepted delivery, an invoice and a bank receipt are different commercial states. Keep their measures separate before describing a company’s performance.

A practical verification workflow

  1. Read whether the agreement guarantees a purchase or merely permits later call-offs up to a ceiling. A maximum possible value is not automatically a completed sale.
  2. Track ordered, dispatched, accepted and rejected quantities as separate stages. Use the recognition rule supplied in the exercise instead of assuming one universal accounting treatment.
  3. Match invoices to the accepted quantities under that rule, distinguishing informational pro formas and duplicated cover-page totals from new receivables.
  4. Reconcile settled receipts to the same invoice and currency. Open promises, deposits and remaining balances should be labeled so readers can reproduce the cash position.

A separate worked illustration

An invented framework permits up to 500 items, but only a small call-off is signed and only part of it accepted. A publicity slide may highlight the maximum framework amount. A useful analyst note instead presents the ceiling, accepted amount and collected cash in separate rows with their respective evidence.

The common reasoning error

Do not turn a discrepancy between cash and an invoice into a solvency or fraud conclusion. First establish the agreed payment timing and what the packet actually covers.

Keep an auditable analyst note

Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.

Practise with the related case

Operation Revenue Silhouette: Distinguish Contract from Cash applies this skill in a fictional evidence packet with five graded objectives. This guide explains the method, not the hidden answer key. Case evidence and entities are invented; the separate illustration above is not a substitute for reading the dossier. Sign-in is required to use the case terminal.

Questions readers ask

Is a pro forma necessarily another sale?

No. Determine its purpose and match it to the underlying transaction before counting it.

Does ordered quantity equal accepted quantity?

Not necessarily. Dispatch, rejection and acceptance records can change the measured stage.
