Direct answer: Trace a feature across physical objects, first scans and later derivatives. The first generation containing it helps locate where it entered the chain, but does not automatically explain its intent.
A practical verification workflow
- Create a generation tree for the physical item, original scan, compressed copy, crop and repost. Retain the relationship between versions rather than treating each website as a new source.
- Compare the feature at each available generation using the stipulated observations. A mark absent from the physical original but present in the first scan needs a reproduction-stage explanation.
- Use digitization incident notes as corroboration when they concern the same equipment and session. Do not extend a note about scanner glass to the physical document without evidence.
- Separate catalogue date, creation date and authorship. Knowing when an archive recorded an item does not necessarily identify when it was made or who drew a mark.
A separate worked illustration
A fictional map has an old ink annotation, while a diagonal line first appears in its digital scan and persists in later crops. The two features have different provenances. Three websites showing the same crop cannot supply three independent examinations of the physical map.
The common reasoning error
Do not turn a reproduction artifact into a secret historical route. Locate its earliest observed generation before attaching an interpretation.
Keep an auditable analyst note
Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.
Practise with the related case
Operation Provenance Mosaic: Trace the Scan Generations applies this skill in a fictional evidence packet with five graded objectives. This guide explains the method, not the hidden answer key. Case evidence and entities are invented; the separate illustration above is not a substitute for reading the dossier. Sign-in is required to use the case terminal.
Questions readers ask
Can a crop create a new independent source?
No. It is a derivative unless it introduces an independently obtained observation.
Does catalogue age prove authorship?
No. Authorship needs its own evidence and may remain unresolved.
