Direct answer: An AI summary built from OCR inherits the OCR’s source limitations. Check meaning-changing negation and numerical fields against the original before treating a fluent summary as a reliable record.
A practical verification workflow
- Preserve the original scan, OCR text and generated summary as separate layers. Record which layer the summarizer actually received.
- Prioritize words that reverse permission, status or meaning, such as not, never and except. A single omission can invert an operational conclusion without making the sentence look unusual.
- Check quantities and arithmetic against the authoritative layer. A later ledger may corroborate one quantity without confirming every other statement in the summary.
- Keep event dates separate from digitization and catalogue dates. A new digital record does not automatically date the original event to the present.
A separate worked illustration
In an unrelated invented note, the original says a shipment is not approved, but OCR drops the negation. A fluent summary then says approval was granted. Even if a separate ledger confirms the quantity of goods, it does not independently repair the missing authorization evidence.
The common reasoning error
Do not count the OCR and its AI summary as independent confirmations. Their dependence should remain explicit in the evidence graph.
Keep an auditable analyst note
Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.

Operation Transcript Drift: Audit an AI Archive Summary applies this skill in a fictional evidence packet with five graded objectives. This guide explains the method, not the hidden answer key. Questions readers ask
Can a readable AI paragraph still reverse the source meaning?
Yes. Fluency does not guarantee that negation, numbers or qualifications survived transcription.
Can one corroborated quantity validate the whole summary?
No. Corroboration is claim-specific and should not spread to unsupported statements.
