Investigation method. Examples below are fictional and separate from the linked case solution.
An unexplained observation can establish that a report or sensor event exists without establishing its cause. Evaluate sensor health, shared acquisition paths and independent comparisons before attaching an extraordinary explanation.
A practical method
-
Separate the observer’s description from the underlying measurement. Record what the device measures and what it cannot identify.
-
Trace independence. Three files generated by one sensor do not become three independent witnesses. Inspect replay, calibration and processing records.
-
Compare alternative explanations and retain the uncertainty that survives. A plausible ordinary cause may explain a file without excluding every environmental event.
Worked example
In a separate fictional exercise, two screens show the same thermal spike. Both read one camera feed, and the processor logged a calibration overlay during the spike. A nearby thermometer is independent but records air temperature, not the object in the frame. The evidence supports investigating the overlay before claiming two independent heat detections.
What this cannot establish
A negative reading at another location may have sensitivity or coverage limits. “Unexplained” describes current knowledge, not a specific cause.
Your analyst checklist
- Preserve the original record and its provenance.
- Separate observed facts from interpretations and missing information.
- Test at least one competing explanation against the same evidence.
- Record the source and limitation beside each conclusion.
- State what additional record could change the assessment.
Practise with a fictional dossier
Operation Echo Array: Separate a Signal from a Fault develops sensor independence and uncertainty. Read six synthetic evidence records, test five short-answer objectives and use progressive hints if needed. The article explains the method without giving the case’s graded answers.

Frequently asked questions
Do two displays count as two sensors?
Not if they share the same acquisition path.
Does a diagnostic fault prove nothing happened?
No. It may explain the recorded artefact while leaving the environment incompletely observed.
How should I phrase the conclusion?
State the observation, the best-supported mechanism and what remains unknown.
