Direct answer: A terrain grid supports measurements at its stated scale and uncertainty. It does not automatically establish human-scale passage width, accessibility or the identity of a hidden structure.
A practical verification workflow
- Identify what the product represents: surface, inferred bedrock, elevation or another measured or modelled quantity. A mapped valley is not automatically an open tunnel.
- Convert cell counts using the stated cell size and keep plan-view dimensions separate from internal clearance or traverse distance.
- Propagate uncertainty using the specified convention. If a difference is formed from two bounded measurements, test the extreme combinations rather than reporting only the nominal difference.
- Trace derivative maps back to the originating survey or model. Resampling, cropping and recolouring do not add independent field measurements.
A separate worked illustration
A fictional feature spanning four cells in a 250-metre grid has an approximate one-kilometre plan length under that model. It says nothing by itself about a person-sized opening. If two elevations have overlapping uncertainty bounds, an apparently precise nominal gradient may not establish its direction.
The common reasoning error
Do not let a recent publication date make an inferred product appear more direct than it is. Measurement type, resolution and validation coverage remain essential.
Keep an auditable analyst note
Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.
Practise with the related case
Operation Valley Resolution: Bound a Hidden-Terrain Claim applies this skill in a fictional evidence packet with five graded objectives. This guide explains the method, not the hidden answer key. Case evidence and entities are invented; the separate illustration above is not a substitute for reading the dossier. Sign-in is required to use the case terminal.
Questions readers ask
Are three resampled maps three independent surveys?
No. They can share one underlying model and its uncertainties.
Can a terrain map establish safe physical access?
Not alone. Access, stability and actual clearance require different evidence.
