Direct answer: Physical stock is not the same as usable or unreserved stock. Build those totals in stages so quarantined items, reservations and cancelled receipts are not allocated twice.
A practical verification workflow
- Start with a defined opening balance and record verified receipts, dispatches and accepted returns. A planned delivery should remain separate until it actually arrives.
- Reconcile the physical closing balance before applying availability restrictions. This exposes a missing movement instead of hiding it inside a reservation adjustment.
- Subtract quarantined or otherwise unusable stock under the declared exercise rule. Preserve the reason and do not assume every physical item is immediately allocatable.
- Subtract existing reservations once, then compare the remainder with the new request and any partial-allocation rule. State the shortfall explicitly.
A separate worked illustration
In a separate invented depot, items returned from an earlier dispatch may re-enter stock only after the stipulated acceptance check. Reserved items can still sit on the shelf, but that does not make them free for a new request. A cancelled incoming shipment never becomes physical stock.
The common reasoning error
Do not add reservations to physical stock or subtract them as if the goods have already shipped. Those choices mix inventory states and make reconciliation harder.
Keep an auditable analyst note
Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.

Questions readers ask
Are reservations a physical dispatch?
No. They change availability without necessarily changing the shelf count.
Can a new request receive part of the available stock?
Only when the exercise or actual allocation rule permits partial fulfillment.
