Direct answer: Count the people or records that directly observed a claim, not every translation and quotation. Then compare what each actually measured and the uncertainty of its timing.
A practical verification workflow
- Map every statement to its immediate source and originating observation. A quotation chain can create several documents from one witness without adding independence.
- Separate different phenomena such as a flash, a sound and an interpretation of cause. Reports of different phenomena cannot automatically share an exact timestamp.
- Convert each time estimate into an interval and test whether intervals overlap. Include the stated uncertainty rather than choosing the midpoint that best fits the story.
- Require a propagation or causal model before joining observations into one event. If distance and timing relationships are missing, leave that linkage unresolved.
A separate worked illustration
An invented witness reports a flash within a two-minute range; another reports a later sound within a one-minute range. Even if both accounts are genuine and independent, a shared cause needs more than similar narrative wording. A copied translation of the first account supplies no third witness.
The common reasoning error
Non-overlapping report intervals do not prove that one witness lied. Different observed phenomena, measurement limits or an incomplete causal model may remain relevant.
Keep an auditable analyst note
Record the question, source identifier, original observation, conversion or calculation, and the narrow conclusion it supports. Separate a confirmed fact from an inference and from information that is still unknown. Keep the original timestamp or unit alongside any normalized value so another reader can reproduce the reasoning.
Practise with the related case
Operation Duplicate Witness: Count the Originating Accounts applies this skill in a fictional evidence packet with five graded objectives. This guide explains the method, not the hidden answer key. Case evidence and entities are invented; the separate illustration above is not a substitute for reading the dossier. Sign-in is required to use the case terminal.
Questions readers ask
Does translation create independent corroboration?
No. It remains dependent on the originating observation unless it adds a genuinely independent record.
Do genuine reports necessarily describe the same cause?
No. Authenticity, independence and causal linkage are separate assessments.
